Emily and 52 week family photo project.

Wanted to add a couple more of Emily. For those who might try to read what is on her hand, it says, "We must be careful of what we pretend to be." She keeps a quote of the day on her hand. ;)

On another note, if you decided to do a 52 week family photo project, how is it going? I am a little behind! So far the photo themes have been: in the car, group photo, mealtime. And that is where I have left off! I hope to catch up today. Click here for the original explanation of the project and here for this week's theme. Don't worry if you are behind. Jump in today! I'll post some of mine in another post this weekend. (have a girls weekend planned to catch up on my family photos!) Remember, throw perfectionism out the window on this project. Just take the photos! You will notice, mine are not edited. The color might be off, etc. Just do it!

The Leonard Girls

I've known Emily and her mom for about 7 or 8 years now. I met them when I was a second grade teacher. Emily came to my class for math one hour a day and I knew her mom because she was a substitute teacher in our building. I remember Emily as a bright, bubbly, model student. I really enjoyed having her for that hour a day.

Fast forward five years or so. My sweet Maddy was of an age where I felt like I could leave her with a babysitter. We usually used the grandparents, but they were not available this time. I panicked for a moment until I remembered Emily! Even though I only had Emily for about an hour a day for a year, I didn't forget that personality (plus I knew her mom already - BONUS!). So she became our go-to babysitter when the grandparents were unavailable. My girls love her!

This year Emily is a sophomore and I can't believe it. My daughter is now the age Emily was when I met her. What an awesome role model this gal is for my girls! I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after I read her pre-session questionnaire. I was amazed that a 16 year old could be so wise. I know I wasn't at 16! This wonderful girl is an honor student and involved in everything under the sun at school. She walks to the beat of her own drum (or as she put it, the opposite direction in a crowd), she is creative, loves to write, play piano, sing (she's in a rock band!) and have fun with her friends. I thought I'd get in touch with her mom to get some tips on raising my girls. ;)

Yesterday's temperature was a very welcome break from the crisp, 30º temps of the prior week. Just in time for my session with Marissa! As a tween, (not a little kid, not a teen) I knew we'd have lots of laughs. Real ones, and the fake ones in our laughing contest. I wanted to capture who Marissa is in this stage. Still a playful kid, but on the horizon of being a young adult!

We headed to a new location to discover some new spots and had a lot of fun in the process. Here are a few of my favorites!

...to take more photos of my family this year and DO SOMETHING WITH THEM! The "doing something with them" part has been eating at me for the last year or so as I fall further behind in creating family photo albums. (Not to mention my second child is 2.5 and there is no baby book in sight) Enter the 52 week family photo project! This is NOT my idea, but I love it! I learned about it through a wonderful photographer I follow (Brooke Snow) and she learned about it from her friend Rhonda. I have heard about the 365, photo-a-day projects, but this one fit my lifestyle so much better. I can do 1 photo a week! So I have set out to follow along with these two gals and have myself a fun little album full of memories at the end of the year. Rhonda explains the whole project HERE. I love that she sets some rules to overcome her perfectionist tendencies, as she puts it. (wow, I relate to that!) I am already behind a bit, but no worries. At 1 photo a week, I can catch up. ;) I'll be posting a few of my photos now and then and per Rhonda's rules, I won't be changing anyone beforehand, straightening up anything or always dragging out my 5d (my rule). My iPhone will do just fine. Heck, I probably won't edit most of them. Get 'er done. Capture the moment. Won't you join me?

The first week was photos in the car. We spend a lot of time in the car. I think a lot of moms can relate! This was snapped on the fly with my phone. Oh, and I was stopped in a parking lot, not driving!

New Year's Greetings! I hope you had a wonderful holiday and are ready for a great New Year! I sure am. I'm planning lots of great things for YOU! First up are Valentine's Day mini-sessions! Valentine's Day is right around the corner and this is a great way to show off your little sweetheart! Maybe with some custom Valentine's Day cards or with just a few portraits or a digital file so you can go make your own cards. I will be doing mini sessions on January 21st at the Country Club Cafe in Shawnee.

What is a mini-session you ask? It's an awesome way to try out custom photography or get a few shots of the kids in between your main session. Laura and kids {Joplin Smile}

This family was my last session on the day I spent in Joplin. I felt so blessed to meet them. They are all great kids and Laura is a great mom and such a gentle spirit. They survived that horrible tornado and lost their house, but they have each other. You can tell they are a tight group and they take care of each other. It was hard to choose only a few to post. There are many more!

The Miller Family [Joplin Smile Sessions]

This wonderful family was the first of my Joplin Smile sessions last weekend and they rocked it! I had been looking forward to these sessions with excitement since the day I signed up on the Joplin Smile team and it was all I hoped it would be, and more. JS began with a wonderful couple in Kansas City (The Fantasma's). They had a wonderful idea to gather photographers from surrounding areas who would volunteer their time and photography skills to help tornado survivors rebuild their portrait collections. Meeting these people was such a blessing for me. Hearing about their strength and perseverance was so inspiring!

The Millers were preparing for a bbq at their house on the day of the tornado. Cindi's daughter, April, was in from Dallas and Richard's daughter, Sarah was over as well. Richard was grilling when he realized the "thunder" he heard was not thunder but the roar of a tornado. The family quickly went in a closet together and seconds later the tornado hit. The closet was left intact and they had escaped the havoc the tornado left in it's place.

When I spoke with Richard on the phone and asked who he wanted in the photos, there was no hesitation. It had to be the four of them, because they survived it together. I feel honored to document the beginning of this new chapter, post tornado.

1. My only celebrity sighting: I recently saw “Big” from Sex and the City. Funny thing is I saw him in a bar in NYC while I was drinking a cosmo. Doesn’t that seem like a coincidence? Especially since I am never in NYC. And never drinking a cosmo.
2. I am a Kansas girl born, raised and never strayed. One look at me and the fact is confirmed: everything pretty much IS flat in Kansas.
3. My most favorite thing to do is to curl up on the couch and watch a DVR’d Real Housewives, and crochet. No judging allowed.
4. I don’t own a full-length mirror, so I am pretty sure all of my jeans look 80’s mom style. Yet I don’t know so I don’t care.
5. I have never been happier in my whole life than I am right now.

The Earles Family

It's been a fun two weeks with my sister and her family visiting from Michigan. We've done everything (indoors) there is to do with kids and then some. Add lots of swimming to that and you've got some worn out kids (and moms + Nana)! It's always a whirlwind of activity, but we sure do have a good time. Since we hadn't done a family session in two years for my sister and her family we scheduled it at the end of her visit. I was dreading trying to get good images without them all melting, but we lucked out with the weather on Thursday. Phew! What resulted was a fun time and fun images and only a little sweat! They left yesterday and although I know we are all welcoming our normal schedules, I sure miss them!

A while back I took my niece downtown for a different take on her dance photos for the year. We wanted to change it up a bit and had fun with all the different backdrops that an urban setting has to offer. She was a trooper through all the outfit changes! I've watched Marissa dance she since she was a wee little one. As I processed her images, it hit me that she is not a little girl anymore! She has blossomed in to a beautiful young lady, inside and out. I sure love this gal!

Baby Caden

I was so blessed to hold this precious bundle for the first time today, which was his second day in this big world. He is just so sweet! Mom is a great friend (who also happens to be my daughter's teacher - BONUS!) and I wanted to capture him in his first days. I'll be knocking down their door to snuggle on him some more, as I just didn't get enough time with him! Of course, I'll have my camera too. Look for more of Caden and big brother!

Taking better photos of your family

Isn't this little guy a cutie? These were taken at about 7:45 the other night. I love the light later in the evening before sunset. It's softer, warmer and just downright buttery sometimes! If you are wanting to take better photos of your kiddos or your family here are a few tips....

1. Turn that FLASH off! If you don't know how, check your manual.
2. Shoot early in the day or in the evening. Mid day sun is too harsh and won't do your images any favors!
3. Get out of the direct sun. Direct sun is harsh and will create raccoon eyes. Find a shaded area and face your subject so reflected light is falling on their face. (in two of these, the first and the last one, the church across the street had the sun shining directly on it and it was reflecting back across the street at Connor's face)

Sylvia C. Bracelet

Last week I told you about the necklace I bought for myself for Mother's Day and mentioned the piece I bought for my mom. Now that I've given it to her I can tell you that I had a cuff made for her with all her grandkids' names stamped on the outer surface. I love it and she did too! This will be my next piece. I need to think of what to put on it though. I already have the girls' names on my necklace. Any suggestions?

Puppies!

This is the second time I've had the pleasure of photographing the Farrell family. This time they added a twist and had four puppies and their momma present! Coconut had four little boy puppies. The Farrells wanted to be photographed with them before they went to live with their new families. We met early one Saturday morning and followed those little cuties around the yard. It was a great time and they kept me on my toes!

These kiddos have sure grown since I've seen them last!

I want to wish a Happy Mother's Day to all the great moms out there! I hope you get to do something just for you. I plan to enjoy my family and spend the day not thinking of anything on my to-do list. I said *plan to*. So we'll see how this task oriented gal will do!

Speaking of Mother's Day, I bought myself a mother's day gift this year! I know that's not customary, but I've been wanting a "mom" necklace for a while now. You know, the stamped silver charms with your kiddos names on them. I was bent on it ever since I met Sylvia C. at library story time. After getting to know this very nice and stylish mommy, I learned that she makes stamped jewelry. Ding! Well, I had to have one.

Oh, and before you go thinking I'm TOTALLY selfish, I did have her make something for my mom too. I'll post that after Mother's Day! Check out the image of my awesome necklace. I added the cross and Sylvia consulted with me to create a personal piece that I cherish! I think I'll be keeping this girl busy. My birthday is around the corner. ;)

Jake: Senior 2011

I knew Jake's family way before our session. Back in my teaching days I had his sister Grace in my second grade class. That feels like yesterday. But the fact that she is a sophomore now tells me otherwise! I know as a teacher you aren't supposed to have favorites, but well...she was one of mine. So when I ran into her mom at the grocery store and we talked about senior portraits for Jake, I jumped at the chance to hang out with this great family! Jake will be graduating next month and starting a new chapter in life. I am so glad I was able to capture him in his senior year, at this moment in time when so many possibilities are on the horizon. Best wishes Jake, and congratulations!

Miracles and Memories

A few Saturdays ago I co-hosted an event up in North KC that celebrated moms and daughters. I partnered up with Lindy Sheets from Mary Kay and some of her team members and we created a fun afternoon of moms and daughters playing with the new spring make-up looks (and Miracle Set) and then getting a complimentary portrait taken together. It was so much fun to see them all creating their new looks. There was music, laughter and of course, yummy treats!

Little Feet

On Saturday I had the pleasure of shooting a really fun event for the Kansas Special Olympics. Little Feet is part of YOUNG ATHLETES™, an innovative sports play program for children with intellectual disabilities, ages 3-7, designed to introduce them to the world of sports, prior to Special Olympics eligibility at age 8. (Click HERE to read more) I loved watching these kiddos experience these activities, some for the first time. They had fun going through hoops, jumping, running, dribbling balls and more. My favorite part of all was seeing all the enthusiasm and love going around. Can't wait to participate again this next weekend!

This quote sums up Miss L. She is such a little lover. Daily, she is full of hugs and kisses for most anyone and loves to laugh and roll around with her sister. She is busy, busy, busy! Loves to vacuum and clean things with baby wipes. She helps herself to the cereal and has even graduated to getting her own bowl. She has hit the stage where she will not think of doing anything unless she can do it by herself!

I think children are complete miracles. What a blessing and a joy to be able to raise this sweet girl.

Daydreaming

This cold weather has me daydreaming of being somewhere warm and sunny. I was looking through my photos today as I gear up for a girlfriends' photo catch-up weekend and came across lots of palm tree filled photos. Photos of my family splashing in the pool and having a great time. It was almost this time last year we were in Palm Spring, CA, escaping this crazy weather! How I long for that weather right now! As I looked at the photos, and past my desire to get out of this freeze-box of a city, I realized that it wasn't just the great scenery that committed those memories to my heart (ok, it helped). It was the act of being together and having fun as a family. Without all the competing to-dos stealing our attention. My aha was that I could create that experience right here, right now if I wanted. We don't need no stinkin' Palm Springs! So I pledged to do just that. I will shut off {some of} the to-dos and make some memories now, that I will commit to my heart always! I challenge you to do the same...

Here's a few more. I love to see my girls with their daddy. They light up when they are with him. There's nobody else on earth but him, that loves them like I do! Sigh. ;)

Like the others from our group, we've known each other awhile now and gone on many a trip together. Fun trips. I miss those trips! We are on a hiatus from trips for awhile. I actually knew Stephanie's older brother before I really knew her. I'm so glad we connected and have stayed friends through the years. They are a great family!

I had a lot of fun at this session. I know getting portraits taken can be stressful on parents with little children. I get it. I have a couple of those little children myself. Even though I love a good posed family shot, it's so fun to have all the fun shots that really show personalities. The action shots. The silly shots. The laughing shots. That's why I like this first one below. There are many great family shots in the bunch, but this one is one of those they'll look back and get a chuckle out of. One that will make them say to themselves, "I remember that time," instead of "What year was that?"

Laura: Senior Year

I had so much fun doing this session and getting to know Laura and her parents! It was very difficult to choose which images to show because I love so many of them! It's weird when I refer to this group as "the Bevermans" because I used to answer to that last name before I got married! I met my brother and his family last Friday for a family photo session and we had lots of fun. My favorite part was watching little Beau try to make his parents laugh. I'll spare you the details, but this little guy is a crack up! Enjoy a few. :)

Elijah - Senior Year

This handsome guy is my nephew and I met up with him last week to take his senior portraits. The fact that he is a senior in high school makes me feel really old. I think he was about 5 when my husband and I began dating. Wasn't that just yesterday? Ok, maybe not. We had a great time finding spots that reflect "him". We went off-road in his truck, climbed through the brush and found some cool downtown spots. Thanks Elijah! There are tons more....

You have to have read my previous posts to get my "peeps" reference in the title. I hope you're not sick of that word yet because I have one more group of my peeps to blog after next weekend! I call all of these guys my peeps because I have known them so long and they know me so well. Let's just say I'll never run for president while these guys are still alive to talk! (no, it's nothing THAT bad!) We have gone through lots together and I KNOW they have my back. We have a weekly dinner group (creatively called Thursday night dinner;) that we have kept up for many, many years. I'm so thankful for it because with our busy lives, sometimes it's the only time I get to see them. Enjoy a few fun images from our time together!

These cuties would be the other peeps I mentioned in a previous post. Once upon a time, way, way, way, back in high school, T & J's mom sat behind me in typing class. (As in typing on a typewriter people!) We had the nicest teacher in the world and I attribute my mean typing skilzzz to him. (Thank you Mr. Hankins) Krista and I have been friends ever since and had many an adventure together. She left her precious little people with me at the park for our session on Saturday. .....I think it was the 4th of July. (Sorry, I started typing the title and suddenly channeled Chicago) So maybe it wasn't the 4th of July, but it WAS a fabulous day for photos! Seemed like 1/3 of the population at the park was made up of photographers. That is not uncommon for this time of year. My crazy busy month is in full swing and I love that I get to visit all these beautiful parks and do something I love, while spending time with great people! Can't beat that. Photographing this gang was a snap! Large groups can be challenging to capture, but this group spoiled me and changed my opinion. Thank you. Enjoy a few from our time together!

It was touch and go Saturday as my session time with the Couch family approached. The weather was rolling in from the west making us all a little skeptical. I know there were some nerves about the weather, but we ended up with some great stuff! Although sunny is nice, I like shooting with the cloud cover. I met the Sheets family last Saturday at William Jewell ( a.k.a. The Harvard of the Midwest by my husband who is an alumni). It was a BEAUTIFUL day to be outside! This large group (or herd, as Lindy refers to them) consisted of Lindy's family and her husband's family. It was such a fun group to hang out with. You just saw the Bret girls a couple months ago when I photographed them with their cousins from Texas. When I met the Bret girls last week, it was with another cousin, Riley. She is too cute for words and was toddling all over the place. It was so fun to watch her. Smiling - then serious. Always on the move. But most of all, curious. You gotta love them! This is the second year I've had the pleasure of working with this family. It feels strange saying "this family" because they are more than just clients. They are neighbors and friends. Maisy: 9 months

I just got these awesome little books in for a favorite client of mine and love them! They are a great way to show off your family and they make great gifts.

These books come in sets of three and have a neat little magnetic feature that keeps them closed. The inside accordion piece has two sides with the option to show several of your session images. The front and back are custom made to reflect your session.

These would make great holiday gifts or stocking stuffers! I know it's still 90º out, but the kids are back in school and the holidays are around the corner!

My second baby is one today! I feel happy and blessed as I celebrate my Lexi today. Parenting is hard. But there is no other job that is so rewarding. I just look at that face and it's all worth it.

We celebrated with a family party on Sunday and today we'll just celebrate all over again with lots of hugs and smooches.

We had quick family photo session last night. My sister and her family rolled in to town about 3:00 from Michigan and last night was the only time we would all be together. With busy summer schedules and my brother-in-law heading back for work, we had to make it happen. The kids were troopers. Especially the ones who had been in the car traveling for two days! My good friend Meghan took our photos for us. Thank you Meg, for squeezing us in when you had lots going on. Love how they turned out!

This one will be my new 10x20 to replace the old one that is lacking the presence of our little Lexi.

These two beauties were fun to photograph! It took them awhile to get used to the fact that the stranger with the big black camera in their face was ok. But once they relaxed with me I got some fun stuff. These portraits are going to be a surprise for their momma's birthday in a few weeks. I posted a couple weeks ago a few from Matt and Katie's engagement session. I haven't done an engagement session before because I am not a wedding photographer, but I sure had fun. I would certainly do more after this one!

Just finished up their images for them and put together their slideshow. I was looking for a song that fit them and I love the one I found. Might have found some new music to listen to. That's huge since I've fallen into the age category where the music of my youth is on the oldies station! I feel like I'm a music person but I think I'm falling into that stage of listening only to the old school stuff and not liking a lot of the newer stuff. Oh well!

Happy 50th!

My in-laws celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday. We threw a fun party in their honor at Renee Kelly's Caenan Castle. What a cool space for a small event. The night was filled with great food, good company, trips down memory lane, group sing-alongs and tributes to the couple. These two are great together and have been a great example to Mark and I in our marriage. Love you guys!

Undercover mission

I met Kendra and Kennedy at the park last Thursday night for an undercover mission. They wanted portraits taken for Kennedy's dad for father's day. So we made our plan to meet when he had a meeting. They had to sneak out of the house, with out of town company and all. Turns out, dad hung around the house a little later than planned, since they did have company. So we pushed the time back. This was fine by me. The light is divine the closer you get to sunset! Hopefully they beat him home so they didn't have to make up any stories (like Kendra did when I called and got dad on the phone one night!)

Esser Family

My husband graduated from William Jewell College, but I have never been on campus before. I've driven by with him, but that's as close as I've gotten. My session on Saturday landed me a closer look when I met Dennis and his family on campus. Dennis is the design talent behind my awesome new logo AND the fabulous enhance magazine (if you know me at all, you know a little about the magazine)!

I've seen the work side of Dennis, so it was great to see him at play with his family. Spending time with he and his lovely wife, and meeting his three adorable boys made for a great session!

Matt and Katie: Engagement

Meet Katie and Matt. Katie is my niece and Matt is the awesome guy she is going to marry! Their special day is in July and I'm so happy for them!

I was excited for their session on Sunday for a couple of reasons. The first is obvious. I was looking forward to hanging out with them! Secondly, I think we rescheduled this session 3 or 4 times due to various types of inclement weather. So we were both glad the weather held up. Finally, I've never photographed an engagement session before and was excited to have these two be my first. They were more than gracious as I played with poses. (stand up, sit down, lay down, crouch down, look this way...:)

Maisy

Thank heavens the rain stopped for this weekend! What a beautiful day to meet these lovely ladies at the park for Maisy's 6 month session. It is so fun to see how the little ones grow and change. Maisy has definitely grown! She sure hung in there for about an hour. She knocked out on mom's chest before she even hit the car. Six things I love about my Maddy on her 6th birthday:

1. Her great big smile and the laugh that comes with it.
2. The way she uses her creativity to turn any situation in to a fun time.
3. Her kindness towards others. Especially her sister. (hope it never changes!)
4. The way she snuggles up to me when we are reading a good book.
5. Her independence mixed with her need for her mommy and daddy.
6. How we can go out for an afternoon of boring errands and have a great time just being together.

Welcome to my new blog! Denise Williams Photography has a whole new look AND a new web site (coming very soon). I am very excited about all this! On to other fun stuff.....

This past Saturday, I photographed my good friend's daughters. It was a gorgeous day to be outside. The last time I photographed them, little Kylie was not very mobile. So we got lots of those little eyes, and that cute face. This time, however, she made me work a little harder for it! So we "let" her run the show and followed her *cute little feet up and down the trail. Big sister Kate was a big help and took my direction like a pro. (there were M&Ms involved, of course!)
